WHAT ARE WE ALREADY DOING WITH REGARD TO THE SUBJECT OF SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is a big concept that we encounter everywhere. But what exactly do we mean by this?
At Renthof Kassel, we strive to understand and implement sustainability in all its dimensions. And we basically focus our efforts on the following:
- to reduce our ecological footprint and continuously save CO2, energy, waste and water per guest as well as strengthen biodiversity and animal welfare
- to support our region by sourcing goods and services regionally whenever possible. We are interested in long-term partnerships – with partners who share the same values as we do
- to be a socially-aware and fair employer who is there for employees as well as for guests. Our facilities are meant to be open to everyone and be fully accessible – but exclusion we are opposed to
Because we are convinced that it is only with this holistic view that we can operate successfully in the long term and in a manner acceptable for future generations.
People have been our focus at Renthof since the year 1298, and for this to continue into the future, we have embarked on an exciting journey towards sustainability, a journey we would like for you to join us on.
Sustainable and environmentally conscious actions are elementary aspects that we have to tackle collectively and manage together, and so let’s start right away.
THE BUILDING
With the idea of establishing a new hotel in Kassel, the choice of location fell on the Renthof and its original masonry construction. The decision was made to convert this historic building into a hotel and thus to breathe new life into the existing substance. In order to make the building come alive for all of our guests, we constantly paid attention to accessibility during the renovation, despite the simultaneous need to observe national monument protection principles.
OUR ENERGY SUPPLY
To maintain optimal and comfortable temperatures, we heat the building with climate-friendly district heating. Here we rely on an energy management system which, through the use of various controllers, makes it possible to act in an energy-efficient manner and to control the temperature of all rooms optimally.
Consequently, we decided to use 100% green electricity.
Our web host also uses 100% renewable energies.
In the heart of our restaurant, the kitchen, we are currently still working with climate-neutral natural gas. Here, however, we are already looking for a solution that does not generate any emissions
We would like to invite you to stay sustainability with us and to use resources such as water and energy in an environmentally-aware manner. Together we can ensure that your and our ecological footprints are kept as small as possible during your stay.
OUR ROOMS
All of our 55 individually designed hotel rooms have something in common: in them you can always enjoy the comfort of our wonderful bed linen, which is made from 100% fair-trade organic cotton, and refillable soap dispensers are available in the bathrooms.
We all love our “Pudelbar” Bar, which invites you to linger with its cozy charm.
In view of the power consumption and the large number of electrical appliances, we have therefore deliberately avoided installing minibars in the individual rooms.
HOUSEKEEPING
All common facilities in our building, as well as the hotel rooms, are cleaned using environmentally-friendly cleaning agents that which have been awarded the blauen Engel / Blue Angel award.
Likewise, we not only pay attention to the highest hygiene standards for our laundry, it is also washed in a laundry facility that is DIN ISO 14001 certified and which has a small CO2 footprint thanks to optimized washing processes with water treatment and water recovery included as well as other energy-saving measures.
What you can do
To further relieve pressure on the environment, you can cancel room cleaning when staying at our hotel, and this then contributes to saving water, energy, and also the use of plastic garbage bags.
OUR MENU
There are hardly any limits to the creativity of our kitchen team; seasonal delicacies are always created here. In addition to striving to obtain as many raw materials as possible from our own region, and to offer you a high proportion of organic food, we focus on vegetarian and vegan dishes. And if you decide to order one of our meat or fish dishes, you can be sure that we will serve the dishes adhering to organic quality or at least satisfying the requirements of the MSC seal of approval. Animal wellbeing is also very important to us. When staying with us, you can feast with a clean conscience.
The proportion of food, which originates from our own region, is growing steadily. We choose our suppliers and manufacturers with great care, and so our kitchen team sometimes knows the farmers and their farms personally. What could be nicer than knowing so well the origin of the food you process?
In terms of culinary delights, you can expect a lot of variety when you visit the Renthof restaurant, as our cuisine is based on the products that are available seasonally. This is how we process the products that are currently available in the fields and meadows. There is something for every taste.
We try to avoid kitchen waste as much as possible and what is generated is used to generate bio-energy.
OUR RANGE OF BEVERAGES
In our beverages menu and at the bar you will find that we love to offer a rich selection of drinks that are exclusively sustainably produced and mostly regionally produced.
We are particularly proud of our refreshing lemonade creations, which we always freshly produce in-house.
Der Grüne Pudel / The Green Poodle
We have developed the “Grünen Pudel” / “Green Poodle” for our meals menu and beverages menu. Our mascot tells you at a glance which foods are of sustainable and regional origin.
OUR SUPPLIERS
We chose our service providers and suppliers with great care. In order to keep the transportation routes as short as possible and to strengthen the regional economic life, we obtain services and products directly from within our own region wherever possible.
During the renovation work, for example, great importance was attached to working with craftsmen from our region and using materials that were as sustainably produced as possible.
We maintain close and long-term partnerships with our suppliers and treat each other fairly. In addition to quality, we ensure that our partners fit our corporate philosophy and that they represent the same values in the areas of social affairs and sustainability as we do. Here we regularly enter into dialogue with one another and address these issues.
PURCHASING OF SUPPLIES AND AVOIDING WASTE
Avoiding waste starts with the purchasing of supplies: For this reason, we avoid the use of single-use products as much as possible and are constantly working to improve our green footprint.
We have replaced drinking straws, cardboard beer mats, and paper napkins as well as individually packaged sugar with environmentally-aware alternatives.
Instead of brochures and guest folders in paper form, we inform our guests about topics such as culture, house information and sustainability via tablets in the individual hotel rooms.
In order to keep our internal paper consumption low , we have installed digitized work processes, and where paper is used, we use recycled paper.
You are welcome to help save paper by allowing us to send you your invoice in digital format.
MOBILITY
Renthof is located in the heart of Kassel, in wonderful North Hesse, and thus practically in the middle of Germany. Due to our central location, we are readily reachable from all directions and an ideal place to come together for all kinds of events.
An environmentally-friendly journey is guaranteed by good connections on the Deutsche Bahn rail network and local public transport.
Feel free to talk to us about the possibilities of a CO2-neutral journey, as we already have created corresponding cooperation agreements.
If you are traveling using an electric car, two e-charging stations have been available in our car park since 2019.
For environmentally-friendly mobility on site, we hand out tickets to our tourist guests for free use of local public transport.
Alternatively, bicycles and e-bikes are available for hire.
Green Events
Our unique event rooms invite you to be creative together. Here you can work productively on your projects with small and large groups of people in a stylish setting. We plan for you and with you events that are geared to the BMU guideline. We would be more than happy to tell you more!
